Networked printer won’t work

  Mr. Chips 11:53 09 Jul 2004

I have a (USB) laser printer connected to an XP Home machine which are networked to a WIN98SE PC.
I can’t print from the WIN98 machine onto by (shared) laser. All other work crosses the network OK. Any ideas why the XP laser won’t work from the networked 98 machine? I use a Norton Firewall.

Check the port settings of the printer in printer Properties on the 98 machine

Wow … that was quick.

On the 98 machine .. printer properties … port settings … it says there is no port to configure.

I can’t see anywhere that the driver knows that it has to print onto the network (from any of the dialog boxes presented.)

Okay have you installed a printer driver on the 98 pc?

  Mr. Chips 12:08 09 Jul 2004

Yes ... it shows as the non-default printer

That was a darft question sorry! tried looking in Network neighbourhood on the 98 an see if you can see the printer attached to the xp

If you have no other physical printer attached to the 98 then make it default

  Mr. Chips 12:14 09 Jul 2004

I never thought of that.
When I look, I see the XP machine ... I see 'Printer' ...... when I click I see the laser printer dialog box, which shows the document in the queue, but with an error.

Would this point to it not being a network problem? ... but more like one of a bad driver (which I have re-installed a number of times)

I do have aworking inkjet on the 98 machine, which I would prefer to have available to it.

by the way... this inkjet works over the network from the XP machine.
