I have a built in Ethernet LAN (10BASE/100bASEtx)on my PC. it has never been connected to the internet before. Could anyone please advise me as to what cable type I.ll need to do this and would appreciate any help/advice on setting it up/ configuring for use. I'm a total novice please be gentle. Thanks.

I hope you're not trying to use it to connect directly to the internet, you need a modem for that...are you?

Are you using a home PC and trying to get internet access on it for the first time?

Have you got a modem?

If you're not sure, look at the back of the PC and look for a socket that looks the same as the one the telephone wire uses at the back of a phone.

Alternatively, right click My Computer, Properties, Device Manager tab, and see what you have under Network Adapters.

...or under modems.
