Network Issues with Windows 2000 and XP

  midlandknightuk123 12:51 26 Aug 2005

Hi can anyone help me? I am trying to setup a netowk in my home. The host computer accesses the internet on a broadband connection and runs Windows 2000.

I ran an ethernet cable to my laptop which is setup as the guest. I can access the internet on it but I would really like to exchange files/music/videos between the two computers, but neither are recognising each other in the "my network places" folder.

Can anyone help?

i think you might need to set up some shared folders. if you can see the other computer to use the internet then your connecting looks ok

I cant see the other computer anywhere on my system. have tried the ping command in dos and it reports no problems on our network.

Thanks for the response

what type of cable are you using. if it is a cable from one computer to the next then it must use a cross over cable

It is a cross over cable I am using yes

Have you tried adding a new network place from within the network folder?
Both machines have to be in the same domain, like MSHOME or they cant see each other.

have tried but the wizard to do it is different in windows 2000 and win xp... can have another go at it... do the domain names etc all have to be the same?

XP gives you the option to save the set up to Floppy after it has run so you can run the same set up on another pc have you tried that?.As far as i know only the main domain name needs to be the same IE: MSHOME or whatever you called it the pc's can have whatever name you wont.
