Network Hell

  PhiltheFragger 10:18 13 Dec 2005

Have 2 XP pcs (SP2) Networked by a Netgear ADSL Router (cabled RJ45)

I can access shared Documents on both systems on the downstairs one, but only upstairs docs on the upstairs one.

When viewing workgroup PCs, the downstairs one is unaccessable from upstairs

I have run Network setup wiz. File & printer sharing is enabled on both.

Originally had zone alarm on both pcs, Put the network range in the Trusted zone on both.

I have now taken ZA off and disabled Windows firewall on both PCs.

I linked a laptop to the network and it picked up just the upstairs docs.

I deduce that the downstairs machine isn't allowing access to its docs.

There is no trace of a firewall in Program files

Am I missing something????

Internet works on both machines

Are they Windows XP Home or Pro?

  PhiltheFragger 12:15 13 Dec 2005

Both Home

You haven't mentioned which versions of Windows XP you are using - XP Professional is more likely to play "silly beggars" than Home Edition. If applicable, have a look at this page relating to Client access with XP Pro - click here

Can "upstairs" ping "downstairs"?

Can "upstairs" see "downstairs", even though access to folders is denied? If not, what happens if you use Windows' Search to look for "downstairs", either by name or by IP address - does that find it?

On the "list workgroup Computers"
both PCs are listed, but access is denied "you dont have permissions to access etc see administrator"

All users are administrators

Will have to report back on Windows search, but Ping works, both ways

HAve you set any folders for sharing on the downstairs PC?

  sharkfin 13:41 13 Dec 2005

Yep sounds like you havent set up folder file sharing permission on the PC downstairs. Re-check this.

I have several folders marked for sharing on the downstairs PC, and during the many times I have run the set up wizard, Printer & file sharing is always chosen.

Also if you look at the Local Area Connection properties, it has a tick by Print & file sharing just above TCP/IP

In My computer/ explorer do the folders show with a "hand" on the bottom? If not then they won't be shared even if file and print sharing is ticked (stumped me for an hour when I first st up my network.

My computer - right click - a drive - properties - sharing tab
