Network cards

I'm currently working on buying my new computer, but am unsure of the significance of a network card. Is it only needed for hooking up to a network or are there more convenient uses? Cheers

Yes and no I have two cards in my pc one connects to the network, the other connects to my Broadband cable modem.
You can also, with an adaptor, connect a printer or scanner via a network card.

If you have cable then this might connect to a network card.

Most other broadband adaptors are USB though I believe, as are most printers and other peripherals at the moment. Therefore I'd say more USB ports would prove to be more useful...
