network cable unplugged error

  sugarbabe 14:55 05 Mar 2009

I am trying to attach my pc to my netgear router.

I have run an ethernet cable from router to a cat 5e socket. the cat 5e socket then has a long ethernet cable that runs to another cat 5e socket in my study. I have then plugged pc into socket with ethernet cable.

I used to have one ethernet cable that ran from router to pc and that worked fine. I have added sockets either end as i needed longer cable but now not working.

I feel i have missed something please help???

Are you sure you havin't used a crossover cable in the mix?

Are you sure the sockets are correctly wired?

Is the total run longer than 100 metres? Although if so you would still turn the routers light on - but get massive amount of CRC errors.

Router turned on, lol?

yes router is turned on.

How would i know if i have cross over wires??

As far as i know sockets wired correctly, was very careful while doing them

Pull the plugs and hold them side by side, with th clip side away from you. The wires should be the same from left to right (both have orange on left).

My money is on an incorrectly wired socket.

checked and double checked sockets look fine to me.

i should check ethernet wires 4 cross over???

Both patch leads should be Straight through, ie. same coloured wires in the same place at each ends.

The cat 5 cable between the sockets should have the same coloured wires on each socket.

Make sure the wires in sockets are seated correctly i.e did you use the correct tool or a thin blade screwdriver?

used the correct tool. will double check all coneections
