net send for linux?

hi,
i wish to communicate to a PC running linux from a pc running windows 2000.
can the net send command be used in command prompt or is there an alternative method within command prompt window to allow communication to linux machine?

over the LAN.
I have previously been using a PC with windows and using MATLAB which sends a "net send" message to another PC when a test has completed. I need to do the same thing but send to a linux machine so that the message pops up on the linux monitor.
