Neighbours' Wireless Channels - How to Identify

I can detect 5 neighbours' networks in my house.

I want to set my wireless network to an optimum channel and avoid interference with my neighbours (suggested in many on-line documents).

Short of going around and asking them what channels they're on (and they may not know!)is ther any way I can detect what channels they are on with my wireless laptop ?

There are programs such as Net Stumbler.... Given such apps' less than legal uses, I won't post a link.

Thanks for your suggestion ade.h, I am sure something like that would do what I require.
