My birthday is very soon but I don't think that I'm getting an Apple TV which as far as I can gather is similar.

Personally, I'd spend a bit more money and get one of these bad boys. If your main aim is to turn your TV into a 'smart' TV, the thing to watch out for is that, just because you can connect it to the internet doesn't mean that you have access to everything that's on the internet. For example - all the catch up TV services. You also need an inbuilt browser. I'm not saying that this WD device can't do all that - I'm just suggesting you check. But if all you're looking for is the ability to play files from a variety of local media, this may work.
