Need to replace my graphics card

  RogerB74 13:29 02 Aug 2009

Hi, new here. I think this is the correct place for this question.

So my computer failed to boot properly and I went through the usual things as suggested in my manual, and whilsy the OS worked, the display was mangled. I contacted the Dell technical support and it appears the issue lies with the Graphics card. My warranty expired and I was quoted £218 for a replacement. Ridiculous, I thought and so I've been looking around (on a borrowed laptop) of cards that are available now.

My current, now kaput card is a 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT. My computer is an XPS 420 with Q6600 Quad Core 2.4 GHz, 1066MHz FSB, 8MB Cache. I have 3GB 667MHz DDR2 Memory.

Basically what can people recommend as a replacement card? My budget would most likely be under £120. Obviously these days the cheaper the better but I want at least somewhere near the performance of my old card.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Why not just buy another 8800GT

there are many more to be found apart from the link..

Well, I need the new card asap and so will have to go to an actual shop tomorrow, so I wanted some suggestions as to what the alternatives are.

If you want to get an equivalent replacement, here's a 9800GT for £75 click here

A £80-84 GTS 250 / HD4850 for a small step-up is definitely worth it for the money click here (click BUY link there) / click here & click here

For a budget of £120, one of these will do nicely:

HD4870 click here (512Mb) / click here (1Gb)

216-core GTX 260: click here (click BUY link there)

For the latter couple of suggestions, the PSU will ideally require 2x dedicated 6pin PCI-E connectors though. Scan/today prices expire at mid-day tomorrow. G

P.S. To get free del: for Novatech, choose this option at checkout / for Scan click here or click here

gts 250, 8800gt is obsolete, gts250 is better than 9800 that replaced the 8800.

Sorry, forgot to mention that most of the cards above will occupy two slots (or more) on account of their large coolers. So you'll want to check for available space, especially if you have other PCI/PCIE cards installed. G
