Need help upgrading radeon 9000 in hp pavilion

  mooney1999 20:01 13 Sep 2008

I have had my hp pavilion desktop for 6 years and it has done me proud. I have just bought SPORE and my radeon 9000 graphics card is not powerful enough. Could I simply replace the radeon with a new powerful one and if so, any ideas on which one?

Many thanks for any help.

I'm afraid not. As you system stands any money spent on a new (old) Graphics card will be money better saved towards a new PC.

I'll have a browse though my archives, in the mean time, can you post the minimum recommended specs. for the game?

Dear crosstrainer, this is all the info I could get, hope it's what you need.
• 2.0 GHz P4 processor or equivalent • 512 MB RAM • A 128 MB Video Card, with support for Pixel Shader 2.0 • At least 6 GB of hard drive space
For computers using built-in graphics chipsets, the game requires at least:
• Intel Integrated Chipset, 945GM or above. • 2.6 GHz Pentium D CPU, or 1.8 GHz Core 2 Duo, or equivalent. • 768 MB RAM Supported Video Cards
ATI Radeon(TM) series • 9500, 9600, 9800 • X300, X600, X700, X800, X850 • X1300, X1600, X1800, X1900, X1950 • 2400, 2600, 2900, • 3650, 3850 NVIDIA GeForce series • FX 5900, FX 5950 • 6200, 6500, 6600, 6800, • 7200, 7300, 7600, 7800, 7900, 7950 • 8400, 8500, 8600, 8800 Intel(R) Extreme Graphics • GMA 950, GMA X3000, GMA X3100
Standalone cards that are installed in vanilla PCI slots (not PCIe or PCIx or AGP), such as some GeForce FX variants, will perform poorly. Intel integrated chipsets featuring underclocked parts, such as the 945GU, GML, and GMS, will not perform adequately. The NVIDIA GeForce FX series is unsupported under Vista

If the rest of your pc specs are up to it(as you don't say what they are),the cheap option is just to get a cheap graphics card.
For around £25,this card will let you play Spore as long as you have a pci-e slot.

Just noticed how old your pc is,so i assume it's AGP.
This will do the job for the same price, but don't expect to play other modern games such as FPS.

You need to find out if your pc has an AGP slot or PCI.It's probably AGP.

I have hp pavilion desktop pc. How do I find out if I have an AGP or PCI?

  Davie_k 23:17 13 Sep 2008

The Hp has a budapest motherboard which had a AGP slot (AGP 4x)

Should I just go buy a new desktop instead of trying to upgrade this one as the games that are coming out seem to require more and more power? I suppose my xp has lasted well.

CPU not up to it, waste of cash... :((

  crosstrainer 23:45 13 Sep 2008

Yes, I think that is your best option if you play the more recent games. Some good deals around at the moment.

Look for At least:

A decent AMD or Intel Dual core CPU (Quad core if funds permit)

A motherboard with at least 1 PCIE (PCI express) slot

A graphics card in the 8800GTX or greater range.

And enough memory to use this spec. to it's full potential.

"CPU not up to it, waste of cash... :(("
His post was refering to the fact that he wanted to play spore.
He didn't say he wanted to play the latest games,so i stand by my answer since it would be ridiculous to upgrade it all for one game.
Also i have said "don't expect to play the latest games".
