Ok hi there,

512mb (2 x 256)

I want to upgrade to 1gig. Ok I know how to install it.. but how do i go about what I but. What I mean by this is do i buy 2x 512mb and remove the 2x 256? or can I just buy 1 gig and remove the 2x 256?

Many Thanks in Advance

You need to check motherboard spec, take side off pc and look for make and model no:of board.TURN OFF/UNPLUG PC FIRST FOR SAFTETY REASONS.(go to company site and see how much ram each slot can use, also speed/type egPC133 OR DDR266).
If motherboard ok ,you can fit 1gb single ram stick in a slot.Crucial uk has a memory checker so you get the correct ram,
hope this helps.

do all slots need to be used though?

Motherboards can take different types of ram, some motherboards have slots for two completley different sticks of memory.

it might be beter to download siw, click here and come back with the make and model of your mothefrboard for exact memory configuration.

Sorry for the delay - you can use just one slot and leave the rest empty or 2 sticks in a 3 slot board or fill all slots.

Thats tells you that you have 4 memory slots and each slot can hold a maximum of 1000Mb or 1Gig.

it does not tell you the motherboard but the chipset.

download and run cpu-z to tell the exact type of memory in your system click here

i just downloaded that tool and it said i can only have 1 gig ram. ive got a gig over 2 slots at the moment, yet i have 4 slots. crucial told me i could have up to 8 gig. rather miffed now.

not your fault of course!
