how much are you planning on spending?

i have about £100 to spend on a cpu

Do you mean £100 for the cpu or £100 for the cpu + motherboard?

If the former I'd suggest a Core 2 Duo E6300 or E4300. Motherboard bundles exist for both.

If the latter, I'm struggling.

i can spend upto £100 on the cpu

I would suggest the dual core simply because i believe there architecture already has hyperthreading present and dual core is more efficient so i suggest the Intel Pentium D, hope that helps

OK then I stand by my recommendation for one of the Core 2 Duo's. The 4300 I have seen online for £110, (according to Intel it will be cheaper still in 6 months time, but I doubt you can wait)

Make sure the mobo you choose will support it; some older socket 775's don't.

cpu / mobo / 1gb ram for £200 from Komplett.

safe and easy to overclock this cpu; if you're interested I'll post you a link to an Xbit-labs article on it.
