I followed the advice for Windows ME on the Microsoft site, i.e. entering the following command at the DOS prompt:

dir shimgapi.dll /a /s

No file was found. However, AVG still tell me that six files are infected in the C:\_RESTORE\TEMP directory:

Results of Complete Test, date and time 08/02/2004 12:02:36 :

I cannot delete these protected files. Disable System Restore empties the Temp directory of these files, but after re-enabling System Restore, they seem to return immediately.

Any advice?

Try turning off System Restore, run Stinger click here then turn SR back on.

  Pesala 21:15 08 Feb 2004

The \_Restore\Temp directory contains 22,862 files !!! Why so many?

  Pesala 21:19 08 Feb 2004

But the files seem to disappear anyway when System Restore is disabled, so I'm not confident it will work.

Its the system restore, so all those settings, from all the days...

  DieSse 21:41 08 Feb 2004

You cannot get infected from the restore folder UNLESS you do a system restore. Any viruses in their will gradually be overwritten by uninfected files.

  Pesala 22:04 08 Feb 2004

Disabling System Restore removed all 22,862 files so nothing for any virus checker to detect. No wonder my complete AVG virus scan took about 50 minutes.

Thanks Diesse, I know I cannot get infected by the My Doom virus, I only need to worry about Sars or Chicken Flu. (~_~) I expect MyDoom will reappear in a few days, as it did the last time I went through this procedure. If it does, I shall keep System Restore turned off, as it never seems to work when I need it most.
