my m8's slow hard drive

  rossyboy11 22:20 12 Feb 2005

my mates computer is very slow, and it takes ages to load up (about 8mins) it comes up with the "tiny" logo (the manufacturer of the pc) and then goes onto a blank screen for about 2mins, then goes onto the Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition loading screen, then back to a blank screen before going to the welcome screen, is there anything you can do to help?

from ross aged 11
P.s explain in simple terms because im only 11

Get him to defragment. Diskeeper lite is better than Windows defragmenter click here

Could also try using the Bootvis tool click here

Otherwise Start, Run, type

and click OK. Click on the Startup tab. Post the list of programs that are running on startup here.

and post back with a list of the programs that load at startup. One of them (or a driver problem) is probably the cause of the Windows slow load.

" dan_d00d - oh for goodness sake grow up "

Well said. ;-)

Do as VoG™ suggests. This should make it boot a lot faster. If it still takes awhile to get past the tiny logo. It may be worth looking in the bios to see if quick boot is enabled. But see what results you get from VoG™ suggestions.

Good luck.

do you know how to start the thing in "safe" mode so defragment can be run from there:)

dan_dood2, why don`t you post the problem here yourself, then members can question you direct.

Because Ross showed me this site after he posted the question ok?
