"My Computer" malfunction

  daveac41 13:56 16 Oct 2008

When I left-click on "My Computer", the box opens - after that - nothing. I have to go into Task Manager to close it. It shows as "not responding".
Everything else appears OK. What is the problem, please? (WXP SP3)

have you tried running your Security programs yet.

  daveac41 14:23 16 Oct 2008

Yes, both AVG and C Cleaner

If you have an XP CD goto RUN and enter sfc /scannow

This will check all your original XP settings and corect (from the CD) any that are in error.
This should cure the problem.

Note the space between sfc and /

System Restore back to before this started ??

  Rahere 15:26 16 Oct 2008

before you start replacing files - Is this recent behaviour and do you have antivirus or any other on access scanner installed. It could be this that's slowing/stopping things.

experiment by booting in safe mode to see if this still happens

Also do you have a scanner attached, try disconnecting this temporarily

run a scan with malwarebytes too

terry brown - this might work but it will restore the original and therefore oldest versions of the files it finds so you might reverse any security updates added since the installation which could be a dangerous move.

Thanks to all. Dunno what it was, but a thorough blast of AVG seemed to fix it...
