Multiple profiles problem

I am having a problem with multiple profiles.
Usually, a user logs in to the network, it loads their profile, which includes their desktop and when they logout it is saved back to the server.
Recently, a number of users have been complaining that their desktop doesn't appear. When we look at docs and settings, there will be a folder called user and another one or more called user.001 or whatever.
Elsewhere, I have read that you can go to the registry, then HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\ and delete any that have extensions.
Occasionally this helps, but often not.
Anyone got any ideas?

In my experience the 001 account usually means that the network has been loaded twice on the same computer. Check the domain registration on the client machine is that of the DC. Also check that the system clocks are in sync.

Try creating a test user account and see if it has the same results, if not the original user account may have become corrupt.
