MTU settings and Packets/kbs question

  simmo08 19:41 29 Jan 2008

using my pc over a ICS LAN every so often i have to go into the registry to change my MTU settings. Im not sure why but when i try going on the internet only google and a few other sites work, the rest time out.

Using the CMD prompt i can ping the lan to get the correct settings, as so:

ping -f -l 1454

This tells me i need to change my MTU setting (default 1500) to 1454. I do this, restart my pc and voila, i can again use Download Managers and open ANY site.

Question is why do i need to keep changing this all the time?

Ill clear up if bit complicated.

can i determine kb/s by packets recieved per second? Is there a way to do this as i am a software developer would be interested to know.

Cheers all :)

Try DrTCP (TCP Organiser) from:

In the first tab, select Custom Settings and use the required MTU figure; Save.
