Hi Tony, I suggest you go to Google and enter msgsvr32.
You'll get plenty of info to follow.

At a guess I would say you have a creative sound blaster sound card.
Either this card is not compatible with 98 or the drivers need upgrading.

whenever my pc freezes (which at the moment is most of the time), I get the msg that msgsvr is not responding and i have to close it manually which usually leads to a general crash so I'm pretty interested in what this is too

This may explain it more easily. "msgsrv.32 is a programme"

me again - the troubleshooter for this is on click here

hope that helps you (i tried to follow their instructions and they didn't actually tally with my control panel options, so I'm still coping with the freeze/crash syndrome)

It might do , but if you have a piece of software thats not shutting down properly it might cause this error.

Might be worth trying msconfig

click Start -> Run -> type "msconfig" this will then bring the msconfig box up.
Now make sure that "selective Startup" is selected, then in the box's below you should have one saying "load Startup Items" try and ticking this then click ok, and the computer will ask you to restart, agree to restart then test!
