MS Word 2003 is very slow to startup/close.

I have a PC running Vista 32 that is generally running well and fast. I regularly do all the cleanup stuff and keep things fairly tidy.

The only real issue is that MS Word is really slooooowwww to startup and close (I am talking minutes). So much so that I can sometime not realise it has not finished and get conflicts on normal.dot if I open it again too soon.

All the other MS Office program seem to run normally without any delay.

Does anyone have any ideas what to look at - I am out of ideas myself.

normal.dot might be corrupt. Try renaming it to normal.old then start Word.

Thanks - A good idea. I will try that tonight and post the result.

Look on the task-bar while it is opening and if it is stuck on 'running anti-virus' then that is your problem, some anti viruses check your programs as well as documents on startup. I had this problem with Norton at one time and cured it by not checking Word.

Another good idea. Again I cant try it until tonight.

I use AVG and I have been getting pretty fed up with as it has become as bloated as some others now and I am thinking of changing it. I have already disabled some of the most performance consuming features.

Renaming Normal.dot did it. Thanks
