MS Windows 2000 compatibility

Is Microsoft Windows 2000 compatible with the new generation of 64-bit processors?
If so, would it be a retrograde step to operate 2000 with such a processor or should one be aiming for XP or even Vista?

You can run a 32bit OS on a 64bit processor, you just won't get the full benefits of the processor. But most people with 64bit processors don't use a 64bit version of the OS because driver support is patchy to say the least.
