MS-DOS compatability mode file system?

i have just rebuilt my old pc for the kids,when i check performance,which is ok,i get a new box with MS-DOS compatibilty mode file system.for both drives c &d,(2xhd)it also says that some drives are using it and it will reduce overall system performance,it is also listed next to virtual memory,but whin i click on it,it says it is set to windows settings(recomended)the other choice is to set my own?can anyone help me please? win 98se,64ram,2gig,a-bit,be6 mobo,pent ll, 350mz

might be the hard drive controller that has a conflict, right click on my computer, device manager, see if there are any exclamation marks against the hard drive/controller (you might need to click the little + sign to expand the list).

it might be that you have installed default drivers for the hard drive (usual if you have just formatted and re-installed windows), instead of the one on your motherboard driver disc.
