making a data base I want to make a query to select just first half of postcodes only, ie all those beginning SW1.
I realize i could split the postcodes over 2 columns and just query the first column but is it poss to just have one column and query ist part of postcode. (hope this makes sense)

The following will bring in all the post code, i.e. SW1 2TT when entered in the Criteria field in a query and, in the Input Mask of a Table.

Like "*"+[Enter Post Code]+"*"

Recap is correct, sort of.
Put Like "*"+[Enter Post Code]+"*" in the criteria field of your query and when you run the query you will get a prompt asking ENTER POSTCODE.
You then type in SW1 and the query should return all postcodes CONTAINING "SW1". To get postcodes BEGINNING with SW1, you should enter the criteria Like [Enter Post Code]+"*"

Alternatively, you could just enter Like "SW1*" in the criteria fied but your query will always only return postcodes beginning with SW1
