Movie Maker for a slide show - poor resolution.

I'm playing around with Windows Movie Maker for a slide show and find the picture loses resolution when it becomes part of the slide show.
It's all very easy and intuitive, with good title effects and so on, and I appreciate you don't need high resolution for a movie, but is there no way of forcing it to include higher res. pictures ? (the help file is 166 pages and I haven't waded through it yet).
What I am really hoping for is a free substitute for PowerPoint, where the resolution is certainly maintained.
Any advice anyone ?
