MOV files not playing

I'm on a laptop running XP Home SP3 and I'm trying to play the movie trailers downloaded from which are all MOV files. I had no luck with VLC or MPC (all necessary codecs installed). They were giving me messages to the effect that the video could not be rendered. So I caved in and installed the latest version of the Quick Time player and it's giving me the following message 'Error -2000: a necessary data reference could not be resolved. I'm sure I never had this much trouble on any of my previous desktop PC's running all the same software. Any ideas?
