Monitor distant from server?

Hi all

Like most, space is a premium at home and I wonder if this is science fiction or reality?
Is it possible to have your desktop server in one part of the room and your monitor, keyboard, mouse etc in another? What is the longest length of monitor cable available?
Shall have to relocate to the shed otherwise!

Something like this (not cheap) ?

(assuming your keyboard & mouse are PS/2 rather than USB - sure they do other versions though).

All you have to do is run a ethernet (CAT 5) cable between the two boxes - one is at your PC end the other where the monitor, keyboard & mouse are.

How's that?

Don't worry, it is possible and there are a number of methods available. I'm a techy at a 'well known' radio station and we leave desktops with everything else in the noisy rack room (our desktops and servers are all 'U' based hence we rack them). We obviously need the keyboards, mice and monitors in all the studios so we just lay KVM, or now in modern day, network KVM. You can get away with long KVM cables anyway so stay cheap and invest in that. You are unlikely to need network based KVM.

Normal long monitor cables will give terrible ghosting on high performance monitors. You can get speciallly made long cables, and monitor cable extension boxes, as above, but they are not cheap.
