what is the difference between an internal asdl, modem and a dialup internal modem.
can an asdl modem be used as a dialup modem

ADSL and and dialup modems use different non-compatable protocols, therefore an adsl modem will not operate in dialup mode.

I didn't realise that you can get internal ADSL modems?

Internal (PCI) ADSL modems are available from eg
Ebuyer at around £20/£25.

I saw click here (pdf) at currys for £20, Model 5506 PCI internal modem 8Mbp/s download speeds, which is probably my next purchase.

I would seriously consider a combined modem/router instead of a PCI modem. Using ethernet for networking is much more favourable than USB or PCI and there are no driver/software issues to worry about.

The last modem/router I bought cost me £23 so price doesn't have to be an issue.
