Modem/Router not available?

I have my modem connected to a wired router, which is connected to my PC and xbox 360. But lately it just seems to keep cutting off, I tried network and sharing center and it told me there was a problem with my IP address, I tried everything it suggested including manually assigning a different IP address but nothing works. It now keeps telling me "modem or router is not available".
I can eventually get it working if I mess around with it for a while, but it keeps losing the connection and it is starting to happen more frequently. Please help!

Disconnect the router and connect directly to modem and see if that work

If that works with out any problems, reset the router using the reset button at back of router and

do a new set up on the router

What make and model number of modem and router

No, its still cutting off. Modem says Scientific Atlanta on the front but I don't know the model number is. I still got a message about conflicting IP addresses, but I checked the IP addresses on my PC, xbox and router and the last number is different on each one so I don't understand. (sorry I'm releatively unexperienced when it comes to networking so bare with me).

OK no problem we all started in this business inexperienced

This is what I want you to do seeing that you are using a cable modem

Power everything off, Cable Modem, which must be left without power for 10 minutes

This is IMPORTANT so that it loses the association between the existing connections

and the computer

Connect the Computer to the Cable Modem's Ethernet Port.

While you are waiting check the setting on the computer is correct

Web Browser Settings

Start IE web browser. Select-Tools-Internet Options-Connection Tab

In the “Connection” screen, there are three selections:

“Never dial a connection”,

“Dial whenever a network connection is not present”

“Always dial my default connection”.

If you can make a selection, select “Never dial a connection”.

If you cannot make a selection, select “LAN Settings”

Next-Finish

After 10 min Power on the Cable Modem when fully booted with all lights displayed

Power on the computer and wait until it is fully booted up

The Cable Modem will recognize a new connection and allocate an IP address to the computer

Now launch your web browser and see if system still failing

If system still cutting off call your ISP and complain about the bad service and get them to check

the line and system

Once you have a stable broadband you can than install the router

Once you have a stable service via the modem and not dropping off you need to do the following

to install the router

Power everything off again, Cable Modem, Router and the Computer

Connect an Ethernet Cable between the router's WAN Port and the Cable Modem's

Ethernet Port.

Connect a second Ethernet Cable between the PC's network card port and Port 1 of the

Router's LAN Ports

Power on the Cable Modem when fully booted with all lights displayed

Power on the Router when the router is fully up and running

Power on the computer and wait until it is fully booted up

The Cable Modem will recognize a new connection and allocate an IP address to the router and

the router will allocate an IP address to the computer

Now launch your web browser and type the Router's IP address access code, which you

will find in the manual, into the browser URL address bar

This will open the configuration pages to set up the router and wireless networking.

Once the router set-up is completed and you have SAVE the setting log out and close browser

Reboot the Router by power it off and back on and wait 1-2 Min’s

You should see all green lights showing on Modem/Router

The 2 displays Icon should be in the task bar-Right Click-Status-Support

What you should see is the following:

Address Type: Assigned by DHCP

IP Address 192.186.1.XXX which is the Computer IP Address

Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway 192.168.X.X which is the router IP Address

If you click the Detail button you will see a lot more information the WINS Server is always

blank

You should now be able to browse the Internet with out any drop out

I would suggest that you reset the router using the reset button at back of router and do a new set

up on the router once the internet service via the modem is stable and working to your liking

If you disconnect the router for any reason and install a computer direct to the modem you have

to power off the modem and go through the same routine the same would apply if you reconnect

the router

Power on the Cable Modem when fully booted with all lights displayed

Power on the Computer/Router and wait until the unit is fully up and running

The Cable Modem will recognize a new connection and allocate an IP address to the device
