I have a 56k Conexant HCF PCI internal modem. My OS is Win ME
Recently I'll be surfing the net, doing fine, whan suddenly my modem just stops sending and receiving. The 2 little terminal windows on the icon go black and stay black. Sometimes I then get booted and have to dial in again, but most times it stayes like that for up to 5-10 minutes and then starts working again.
Anyone have any ideas??
Should I just buy a new modem??

I think this is unlikely to be a modem fault. Have you tried a different ISP? In cases like this I like to have a second pay-as-you-go ISP account to check whether the problem is in my computer or at the ISP end.

My flatmate and I both share the same ISP (logged on at different times obviously).
He has never had the same problem as I do. That is what led me to think it may be my modem....

OICUR2Y's4Me, do you have any conflicts showing in device manager?

I seem to remember having a conexant modem and it wasn't compatible with ME, worked fine under 98se

more likely the isp but a driver update may be worth a look at.

No conflicts showing in device manager.
Signed up with a different ISP and have the exact same problem..... :-(
Updated the drivers with no effect....

OICUR2Y's4Me, do you find that the computer runs smoothly except for the modem problem? If the computer is struggling for resources, then a software modem, which I think the Connexant is, may be having to wait for it's share of the resources. What is the spec of the computer (processor, ram, hard drive size and free space).

computer runs fine. Only problem is the modem.

Might be worth having a go at BT - get the 'GAIN' turned up on the phone line(Dial 150 & ask for engineers). That can make a big difference to your connection and drop outs.
