modem dailing problem

hi
everytime i answer a phone call, my modem automatically dail-out. please help?

details - window xp sp2. dail-up connection,
with setting 'never dail a connection', ntlworld,
mozilla firefox, onspeed for proxy.

I'm wondering what number your modem is dialling. Have a look in Start - All Programs - Accessories - Communications - Network Connections. Then see if there are any entries that don't belong there. Also download and run AdAware and see if there is any malware trying to dial out click here

i have only one dail-up listed (ntlworld) and have spybot S&D installed. have checked and theres no malware found.

my modem only dail out if i answer a phone call.

Have a look in your BIOS and unset any "wake on" modem settings etc. It might be detecting a call and then trying to reestablish when you hang up.

I assume this is a new machine, if its new behaviour then have a think about what you (or another user) has said Yes to, and see what task is doing the dialing when it autodials.
