If you want to use the laptop anywhere in the house then you need a wireless modem.

two types depending on your internet provider. wireless modem for cable providers such as Virgin
or a ADSL wireless modem if yo get your Braod band own the telephone lines from Orange, Ticali, Pipex O2 etc.

Very many manufacturers Belkin, Lynksys are probably the main contenders.

If you receive your broadband through your telephone cable I can recommend the Netgear DG834G wireless modem/router as found here
I have four pcs in the house running off it,three of them wireless.
Hope this helps!

As your broadband is with Tiscali, this is an ADSL service via the phone line and you need a *COMBINED* wireless "Router & ADSL Modem", which replaces the USB Modem. Have a look at models from Netgear, Linksys, Belkin and D-Link, but the most popular is probably the Netgear DG834 series of Modem/Routers which are generally very reliable.
