is it possible to test a mobo without anything attached to it.ie cpu memory graphics card ect.the reason i ask is i have a used mobo (not installed)and before i go to the expence off buying a cpu p4 it would be nice to know.i have psu, heatsink and fan.

Only on a rig designed for the purpose. The manufacturer is the only one likely to have this.

thanks for that i was just hoping there was a way because if the board is naff,i was going to go for the cheaper option and buy an amd board.i assume i can,t check to see if it is powering up.thanks for your quick response.
