Missing Windows router

A friend called to say her XP PC won't boot. From what I can gather, she is getting a black DOS screen which says 'can't find windows router. Please install'.

I've tried Del and F8 with her, the only options are to boot from USB. No cards plugged into readers.

Ring any bells?

More likely to be something along the lines of

"missing or corrupt <windows root>\system32\hal.dll."

Get the full error message, then some suggestions can be made.

Thanks, that sounds like it. She mentioned system 32.

If this is the correct message, is the PC likely to be in DOS Command Prompt mode?

If so, could she enter 'C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe' to do a System Restore?

(I got that from Google)

The message is as brundle, except it is Ntoskrnl.exe at the end. Tried booting with the keyboard unplugged, no luck.

I'm going round tomorrow with an XP CD to do a repair.

Maybe worth a read.

Noted, thanks. I'll save that to my laptop and take it with me.

Booted with the XP CD, was going through the repair options when the PC shut down.

Restarted in Safe Mode with Command Prompt, about to ask it to look on the CD for Ntoskrnl.exe when the power went off. Husband in the garden with a power tool got the blame.

Power restored, I pressed the button and it booted straight into Windows.

It transpired that the PC was not being shut down normally but by turning off the power. That, coupled with the houses' dodgy electrics, must have caused a Registry error.

I have recommended a UPS be installed, and shutdown done with the mouse.
