I have just completed building a new PC with an AMD Athlon 64 3200, a Gigabyte GA-K8N motherboard with onboard AC97 sound and Windows XP SP2. Everything runs like lighting except for one tiny niggle.
I can play MP3 files, or insert and audio CD and the sound come out perfectly over the stereo speakers. If on the other hand I wish to play the Windows XP tutorial then the sound is hardly audible even when the speakers are turned up to 100%. This applies to Window sounds and all wav files.
The strange thing is if you plug the speaker cable into the front audio port this cures the problem.
I believe I have been to every setting and cannot see any devices muted which is what I expected to find. If all else fails I guess I’ll have to install a PCI audio card.
All help appreciated as usual.
