missing search facility in Win XP

When I click on search on the tasks I get the dog wagging his tail but all the command lines in the lefthand pane are missing. I presume I have deleted a file or lost some DLL. How can I reinstall? Using restore hasnt sorted the problem.

At the top of the search box there is a magnifying glass with the word search, click it and see if that works.


Thanks for responding. Having the left hand pane details enables me to type a file name etc. Going to the magnifying glassgives me locations to look in. I am I still am not able to type in a file name or folder for the computer to search for.

I had exactly the same problem about six months ago no idea why it stopped working either but a visit to windows update and a search through all the downloads available and there it was.
To be honest cant remember where exactly but i dont think that it was a critical update hope that helps m8
