missing registry data

After returning my WinXP computer to the original delivered state, because of a number of problems, I get a message on startup that says "can't find registry data" -or something like that, anyway.
I've tried SFC /Scannow, but don't know what else to try, to restore the registry.
Can anyone help?

switch off system restore
rebbot the PC and switch restore back on.

done that, but the message "registry data not found" is still there.
And System Restore had turned itself back on, when it restarted.

Thanks for that. In finishing off my re-install, I've also had to to the keyboard, cordless mouse etc. General tidying up. - and losing my internet connection, -and keyboard refusing to work!
It all seems Ok now, until I discover the next problem.
Thanks again.
