missing ram

  dalimena 09:05 20 Aug 2006

Hi just a query really, i purchased a emachines E4056 yesterday from Staples. It says on the box that it has 1gb ram, but when i go into control panel and system, it says : intel pentium 4, CPU 3.06GHz 3.07GHz, 368MB of RAM Physical address extension. My question is am i reading modern ram meanings wrongly or has it only got 368mb in?. If so ill take it back. Thx for any help.

It should read the full 1GB in the General tab of System.

368MB is an strange reading........since you've only just bought it take it back and explain the problem.

I took the machine back and apparently it has shared memory and the graphics use 130 mb or around that amount. I can disable it and have 512 mb again but they suggested i leave it as it is. Thanks gudgulf and brundle for your help anyway.

Not quite with you here. You say it has1Gb of RAM so even if it is shared with the video card how do you get only half the installed RAM of 512 Mb? Download the advisor here and see what it says. click here

If this is your machine click here the spec says you have 512Mb of RAM

128mb shared video mem would leave 384mb, weird numbers

If you right click on My Computer\Properties it will tell you what ram you have in it

  dalimena 21:08 20 Aug 2006

Sorry guys i got it wrong yesterday, it has 512 mb ram installed, but only 368 shows in My computer properties. As i said apparently the missing RAM is shared with the graphics as it has no graphics card. I can disable this but as the machine is quite fast at the moment, i think ill leave it.

If you disable all the memory you wouldn't have a picture, the onboard graphics needs some of the memory to run.
It does have a PCI Express slot so you could add one if you wish and disable the onboard giving you 512mb to use.
