Missing Operating System

Hi all

I used Active Kill Disk to delete the hard drive on Windows XP.

I assumed inserting a CD Rom or DVD Rom containing XP again would auto re-load and install?

Message says "error loading operating system,"

any ideas please?

Thanks....Neil.

Is BIOS set to boot first from CD Rom, as it may be looking at the Hard drive for a OS. Where it should be Boot Order in BIOS CD Rom as First Boot followed by Hard Drive as second

Hi Woodchip

No idea - I will check at work tomorrow!

I looked in setup and restored, set as default.

I would say thats the problem, its trying to boot from the Hard Drive. Its going to have a job doing that after you wiped it

I wiped it on purpose.

Installing a new XP OS.

Like I said it won't reconize the disk.

I will try what you suggest.

Thanks.

bit late now but in future you don't need to use anything to wipe your disk when putting a fresh install on it.

Only way to do that is to do a Repair using the OS CD. If you just run setup after its done you finish up with two OS's on the hard drive one that works and another that as the old problems

If you put the o/s on the partition its allready on you go through the process of reformatting the partition and installing your new system.

How do I set the PC to boot to Bios instead of the hard drive?

Please refer to 1st posting

Regards
Neil.

Switch on
wait for message "press .... to enter setup" or similar message

The key to press is different for different machines usually
ESc
Del
F1
F2

etc. press the key and you are in BIOS, navigate to Boot order and set the CD drive as the first boot device.
Remember to save and exit (usually F10).

The PC should then look for the CD in the drive and give you a message "pree any key to boot from CD..."

Yes.... It says press any key to boot from CD... but then it returns the message "error opening operating system"

I cannot get past this message!!

ideas please?
