Missing DVD ROM and CD-RW

My Windows ME pc booted and not recognised that it has dvd-rom & cd-rw drives. They're not listed in Device Manager or My Computer. After a period of switching the pc on and off it recognised the drives but kept freezing/locking. I opened the case and unpluged the cdrw, now the pc is working ok and the DVD ROM is listed and working. Is it conclusive that the cdrw is faulty or could it be the driver (both drives appear to use c:\windows\inf\mscdrom.inf)? I've tried swapping the ribbon cable.

Did you check the jumper switches on the drives to see if one is master and one is slave? That might be the answer.

No, but that wouldn't explain why the pc locks up when it does recognise the cdrw.
