I want to set up mirroring raid array as a means of automatic backup
in case of mechanical failure .My question is because data is written to both disks
Dose this mean that a virus will be written to both disks and if the OS failed and needed
to be reinstalled would all the data be lost

Yes. Viruses would inhabit both discs. RAID1 is great for data protection and HDD failure. Replacing the failed HDD will allow the good disc to rebuild the new disc.

I have RAID 1 but I also have an external HDD with Acronis to back up so a full image can be used in the circumstances you describe.
