Migrating settings from a corrupt install of XP

hi guys,

friend of mine absolutely knackered his computer so that his master boot record wasn't working.

I managed to fix it using the XP recovery thing but then edited the boot.ini to take out the old one and left the wrong one. For some reason I couldn't use the same solution again.

The situation now is this:
The hard drive has got everything it used to have on it with the original Windows installation under C:\Windows

I have reinstalled Windows into a new directory C:\Windows2. I have got the user settings, documents etc moved across by safe modeing and then copying the old ones into new directories.

Can I recover the old registry, or even simply the old installation of Windows?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
