A couple of days ago the yellow shiels for updates alerted me to updates I clicked on it to allow the installation. It said it was complete it didnt ask for reboot then within 5 mins the same alert for the same update came up in the task bar.I have tried to install this update 10 or more times without sucess.I'm running XP pro SP3 .Here's the updates
Initializing installation... done! Installing Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP x86 (KB979909) (update 1 of 2)... done! Installing Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB982168) (update 2 of 2).
check that you have 'office source engine', 'windows installer' and 'background intelligent transfer service' running by clicking on start, run and then type 'services.msc' and hit enter...double click each one and start it if not already running...then try to update again..for me its usually one of the above not running.
"Update is still showing in task bar and keeps returning even when I update"
This is because it is only going through the motions, but not actually updating. It has put something in there, which is blocking any further attempt on your part. Firt you'll have to uninstall them, bringing your PC back to how it was before you got into this vicious circle.
You could try a 'System Restore' to before the original, attempted instal. Then click here to do an 'Express' search, followed by a 'Manual' install of what it tells you is needed for your PC.
If that doesn't work, then I suggest you click here and follow cocteau4's advice.
