Mice ball v opticle

I have used ps2 ball mice for some time and never had a problem except dust which is easy to clean out.
Now I have taken delivery of a super duper vista prem 64bit pc with an optical mouse via usb.
This latest mouse is not always accurate in its movement.
Sometimes it is slow to catch up.
Is it likely to be because it’s a cheap mouse or are optical/usb types less accurate than the old ball type?
I have tried diff mats and even just white paper.
I can not use my old mouse because my new pc does not have ps2.

Do you have the latest drivers installed?

I would try adjusting it. Control panel, mice, and there you can adjust speed etc, have a play. Optical mice are a hundred times better than ball in my opinion.

It does sound like it needs adjusted in the:

Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Personalization section.

I always find that the default settings are a little unresponsive.

I agree with The Old Mod, optical mice are way better than the ball. I have never seen a ball mouse since the days of the Amiga 500, I can remember regularly having to clean the rollers of fluff etc ;-)

Try using your new Optical mouse on the bare Desktop.

I concur some patterned mouse mats can give optical mice a severe attack of the heebie geebies.

I had tried adjusting speed etc in control/mouse.
Had looked for more up to date drivers.
It is like towing a car with an elastic tow rope as opposed to a rigid tow!
All my ball type mice over the last 2 or 3 decades are/were better than this!
Failing any other suggestions I will buy a ball usb mouse and try that!

If you want to use your old mouse, PS2/USB adapters are readily available and inexpensive.

Technotiger, he has not got a PS2 connection on his computer, so will it work the otherway round?

  Technotiger 16:36 17 Oct 2008

Yes, plenty of different types ... click here
