Messenger and video

I want to use windows messenger through a Linsys router for video and voice with a relative. I contacted Linksys who told me I have to open some ports, They gave me the port numbers. These are the same as are given by Microsoft and is the same advice. apparently there is a Upnp issue but a firmware upgrade from Linksys is supposed to fix this. A networking engineer told me he has never got messenger video working through any router even a £15,000 sisco and the fault lies with Microsoft. He tells me they (ms) are working on the problem. Does anyone know anything about this or is there any other messengers that WILL work?
Thanks.

You could try Yahoo messenger; don`t know if it will be any better.
