Memory Upgrade Problem

  Antony-219470 21:17 22 Oct 2003

I recently tried to increase the RAM from 1 x 256mb SDRAM DIMM to 2 x 512Mb SDRAM DIMM. When the computer booted up the memory was deemed OK but when the final Windows Logo appeared it was distorted and the computer froze and tried to restart, again this was un sucessful. When either one of the 512mb DIMM is used solely everything is fine.
The motherboard is a gigabyte GA-7IXEH and can support 3 x 512MB SDRAM DIMM. It has a Inno3D NVIDIA Geforce 2MX400 64mb AGP with an AMD Duron 900. OS Win 98.

First try installing one stick of RAM at a time to check one of them isnt faulty.

This can sometimes happen, even though you are using the same type of memory, Its always best to buy the same make if you can.

Sometimes they just don't get on with each other, that will explain why both will work fine when used individually. Regards. j.

Both memory modules were purchased at the same time and are identical

Windows 98 doesn't like more than 512 Mb RAM.

may be a long shot but is the frequency correct, the spec for this m/b says pc133 memory, it is not unusual for memory capacity on m/boards to change depending on its frequency, e.g. higher the frequency lower the overall capacity. For instance my M/B will only allow one stick of fast memory rather than three sticks of a lower speed.

Just a thought.

When you use an AGP graphics card with W98 the memory should not exceed 512Mb. The AGP Card reserves part of the memory addresses ,just above 512Mb, for its own use and causes conflicts.

Have a look at Microsoft knowledge base articles 253912 and 304943 , the fist relates best to this problem , it would involve editing the system.ini .

Cacheman software might be a viable solve too

Fist ? i meant first dont beat the PC it always has an adverse effect !

Should have also said run the machine on 512mb till the file has been edited .

Memory frequency is pc133. The m/b can support pc100 & pc133.On the chipset features setup the DRAM frequency is set on Auto. I also ran the computer with one of the 512mb sticks and my old 256mb pc100 with no problems.
