Memory Upgrade Pavillion desktop

I have an HP desktop. It currently has 512mb af ram(2 x 256mb). I want to increase this to the maximum that will fit my system. After contacting HP directly they have informed me that I can only fit 1GB max, that is 2 sticks of 512mb ddr pc2700. However after using various memory scanning tools online such as the Kingston website tool they all tell me that I can fit 2GB max by using 2 sticks of 1gb ram. I am confused by the conflicting advice. Are HP telling me the truth or is it a marketing ploy to encourage me to purchase a new PC or can the online scanning tools get it wrong? Have you used the Crucial scanner at click here. It is the most accurate one I know.
