Memory Upgrade Help Needed Please

  darkster 09:57 19 Aug 2005

Hi all,
I am looking to upgrade my PC's memory from 512Mb to 1024Mb (PC2700). My existing RAM configuration is 2 banks of 256Mb. I have a spare DIMM slot on my motherboard, so will it be ok to put a 512Mb DIMM straight in without any problems or will I have to ditch the existing memory and get 2 banks of 512Mb?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If there are just three identical slots, it "should" be possible to just put in another module.

It's best practice (and sometimes a requirement), to put the largest module into the lowest numbered RAM slot.

Also look in your motherboard manual - some motherboards have restrictions on what capacity modules you can put where.

You don't indicate you operating system. If still in 98SE, don't go over 512MB - the OS doesn't like it and may refuse to work.

Thanks for the replies!
Incidentally, I'm running XP Pro Media Edition and XP Home.
