Memory upgrade

  Taurus 22:52 15 Oct 2010

Hi everyone! I am considering upgrading the ram on my desktop(Dell Inspiron 9200) from the current 4x512mb to 4x1024mb. The ram currently installed is DDR2-533 PC2-4200. My question is; can I upgrade the upgrade so to speak, by installing, for example, DDR2-800 PC2-6400 or even PC3? Particularly, if it can be done from a compatability point of view, will it be worth the extra cost involved regarding any extra speed that might be squeezed from them?
Many thanks

You need to consult your manual to see what RAM your motherboard can take and maximum capacity - OR
use Crucial Memory Upgrade or similar to SCAN your computer - click here

Mr Memory here - click here

Kingston - click here

Thank you northumbria61, Crucial scan says that my system can accept PC2-6400, so it seems that that is the limit. Now just a matter of finding the cheapest!!

Start with E-Buyer

Don't forget to check and buy the correct Voltage - ie: 1.8 or whatever (will be shown on your current memory sticks)

You may find it cheaper to install 2 x 2GB (matched pair) rather than 4 x 1GB which you are considering. It is up to you. I have a preference for CORSAIR.

Thanks again northumbria61, you've been a great help, looks like a note to Santa then.
