Memory ECC or Non-ECC

Having just bought DDR 512 MB PC2700 (64x64)memory I now see that there are 9 chips on the module.(ECC) As my present set-up has only 8 chips and is thus Non-ECC (non-parity), will it be alright to install the new memory next to the present ones? Or can it do damage?

ECC (Error Correcting Code) RAM is normally only used in servers. It is significatly more expensive than standard non-ECC RAM.

Unfortunately it cannot be used alongside non-ECC RAM, and may not even work on your motherboard at all.

Thanks for that alan14. It was the one Question I hadn't asked in the shop. Back it'll go! Fotunately I had not opened the container.
Thanks a lot.
