Memory compatibility or failure problems

  Catastrophe 11:12 13 Jul 2010

Intel D845GVSR MB (OS XP)

Was fitted with 1GB elixir 2Rx8 PC3200U-30331.400

From other PC 512MB elixir 2Rx8 PC3200U-30331.400
2 of these.

Was working fine with the 1GB stick. Added the other sticks and would not boot.

Beep codes 6 quick) mean 8042 Gate A20 cannot be toggled (memory failure or not present).

Popped CR2032 and replaced after few minutes. 512MB beeps stayed the same but 1GB alone gave 3 long beeps meaning First 64k memory failure. Same as when no memory present.

1. Are these memory sticks compatible? They look similar.

2.Could adding extra memory have damaged 1GB stick?

3. Could any (other) damage have been caused?

Any comments gratefully received.

Run memtest86 on them one stick at a time for at least half a dozen loops.

Also just popping the mobo battery is not sufficient you need to short the CRTC jumper at the same time to clear the CMOS.

Thank you for your comments.

"you need to short the CRTC jumper at the same time to clear the CMOS"

I cannot find any ref to CRTC jumper in the manual. I remember something about holding screwdriver across two front panel connections - is this something like it?

You may also have to put them in a certain order eg 1Gb in slot1 etc
